NitroTracker (2006)
A powerful tracker for the Nintendo DS, supporting XM modules, and even WAV samples
Overview
NitroTracker is a FastTracker II-style tracker built for the Nintendo DS. It supports the XM module format, WAV sample import, recording via the DS microphone, and full sample editing. A huge step up compared to LSDJ.
Core features
- Load and save XM modules (PC tracker format) on DS.
- WAV sample import and editing (cut, fade, reverse).
- 16 hardware channels for playback.
- Record samples using the DS’s built-in microphone.
- MIDI support via DSMidi for external gear integration.
Interesting Info
Originally submitted in 2006 for a DS homebrew coding competition, NitroTracker quickly became a favourite among DS-based musicians. Community forks and continued development (including support for the DSi/3DS via NitrousTracker) show its longevity in the handheld music-tool scene.
Practical tips
- Prepare WAV samples on your PC then import into the DS for custom instruments.
- Use the XM format import to integrate with desktop tracker workflows.
- Since it’s homebrew, create savestates for virtually infinite songs.
